Inspiring the next generation
Schools must give pupils the opportunity to be inspired by employers, to meet them face to face and find out about the world of work. Linking our education system to higher education and industry is vital for the local economy and successful working lives of our young people.
Get the Buzz is the brand name adopted by the recently created Business and Education Board to promote business and education linked activities in County Durham.
During July (2015) a series of employer roadshows were delivered to County Durham schools. Designed to help students to learn more about the world of work and the various opportunities available to them, the individual events included employers delivering interactive learning experiences and discussing the job opportunities within their companies. Nine schools throughout the County participated in the project – 3,500 pupils were engaged.
Get the Buzz grew from the work of the Business and Education Board, an independent body which is made up of representatives from industry and education. The Board was established to help build a lasting relationship between our schools and businesses and thus deliver a series of routes through which students can access to a wide range of career opportunities and at the same time give businesses the ability to become involved in the world of education. The boards function is to enable a dialogue between the sectors that will result in positive outcomes for all.
The Board needed to understand the current provision in the County, understand where the gaps are and Identify ways in which gaps might be addressed. Business education engagement is a very broad area which potentially encompasses a huge range of activities.
