Centre for Process Innovation

The North East Technology Park (NETPark) has international expertise in printable electronics and is home to The Centre for Process Innovation’s National Printable Electronics Centre.

The centre is developing revolutionary printable electronics technologies including thin flexible displays, low energy organic lighting and flexible solar cells. The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) provides internationally renowned expertise and unique technical equipment sets in opto-electronics, integrated smart systems, materials and displays and vacuum coating.

The facility at NETPark enables companies to reduce the cost and associated risks of developing production-ready processes through prototyping and scale-up to low volume manufacture for applications in photovoltaics, lighting, displays, intelligent packaging and sensors.

CPI provides the printable electronics community with the physical, intellectual and commercial infrastructure to accelerate the move from laboratory to production.

The development of printable electronics technology provides benefits for end-users operating in the automotive, aerospace, defence, medical and built environment markets – printable electronics has the potential to enable products to be lower cost, lighter in weight, and to provide more integrated functionality and lower energy consumption both in manufacture and use.

CPI forms a key part of the UK Government’s first High Value Manufacturing Catapult. The Catapult is the UK’s Technology Strategy Board’s national programme to support innovation in sectors such as automotive, aerospace, food and drink and energy.

CPI collaborates with pre-eminent global innovators including De La Rue, Plastic Logic, the US Army Research Laboratory, HP Labs, and the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, Cambridge, Manchester, and Imperial College, London, among others.
