£50,000 investment in County Durham hotel

A hotel within a medieval castle in County Durham which dates back to the 12th century has launched a new on-site restaurant following a £50,000 investment.

Walworth Castle Hotel, in Walworth, County Durham, has opened the 1189 Bar and Kitchen, with the name of the new concept a nod to the year the castle was originally built – the same year Richard I became King of England.

The refurbished restaurant is open daily, serving a range of traditional dishes created by head chef, Steven Myers.

Owners Rachel and Chris Swain took over Walworth Castle in 2000 and since then have invested £8m, turning the castle and surrounding buildings into a 32-bedroom hotel, holiday cottage and gatehouse lodge.

Rachel Swain said: "We wanted to provide a casual eating space with a comforting menu, providing everything from light snacks to Chateaubriand.

"Chris and I are completely passionate about Walworth Castle and it's been our life's work getting Walworth Castle to where it is today."

Chris Swain added: "You can never rest on your laurels in such a fast-moving industry.

"We are always striving to improve what we offer and this is the reason for launching 1189 Bar and Kitchen. We wanted to create an environment where guests can come and enjoy a drink and a snack or a delicious three-course meal."
