50 years ago, when Allen Grievson first opened the doors to Mitchells Grievson in Bishop Auckland, the UK economy faced strikes, high inflation, plus an oil and energy crisis. Anyone would be forgiven for feeling the sense of déjà vu? 1973 was also the year the government introduced Value Added Tax (VAT) at a single rate of 10% on most goods and services, replacing Purchase Tax.
We are sure Allen, who retired from Mitchells Grievson in 2013, was having similar conversations with clients back then as we are right now. However, 50 years in business have shown us, focus, good management, and effective planning can result in a safe journey and success for our clients.

Director Nigel Rea FCA began working at Mitchells Grievson as a work placement when the business was celebrating its 25th anniversary. Nigel said: “I can remember starting as if it was yesterday and never imagined that I would still be working here 25 years on. Several members of the team have also been with us for 10 to 20 years, providing consistency and a wealth of knowledge to clients, many whom have been with us for decades too!”
Medical accountancy expert Phil Harnby re-joined the business in 2018 as Director. His wealth of knowledge and experience in the medical sector has led to the creation of a specialist arm to the business. Mitchells Grievson is fast becoming the ‘go to’ accountancy company for medical professionals and practices in the region.
Phil said: “We owe a debt of gratitude to our clients for their loyalty and trust over the decades. Our business is built on these strong relationships and our ability to help businesses to thrive and people to prosper. Many of our new clients are introduced to us from existing clients which makes us extremely proud.”
