Plans for the food store on Chester Road, East Stanley, were approved by Durham County Council’s planning committee, bringing an end to an uncertain future for the site.
It was previously a bus depot for the local operator Go North East, dating back to the 1920s, until 2019 when the buildings were demolished and the site was cleared.
A planning report notes how the new supermarket will improve the current shopping options in the area, as the majority of residents currently shop at nearby branches of Asda and Aldi, with locals also visiting stores in Consett.
