Revenues have nudged up and pre-tax profits jumped almost five-fold at a self-adhesive vinyl distributor which can trace its roots back more than 185 years. Barnard Castle-based William Smith Group started life when it invented a horse-drawn mechanical street sweeper before evolving into a manufacturer of snow ploughs, tar sprayers and mobile cabins. Today it serves the sign and graphics industry. Accounts filed under William Smith Group 1832 Ltd revealed revenues climbed to £18.7m in the year to 31 March 2020 from £17.8m 12 months earlier.
