Construction starts on £7.9m specialist care home in Bishop Auckland

Exemplar Health Care, a leading provider of specialist nursing care for adults living with complex needs, has begun on-site construction for its new £7.9m specialist care home in Bishop Auckland, County Durham. The home was delivered by Yorkshire-based S&SA architects and contractor Walter Thompson.

Construction started at the new home in June 2023 and, once complete, will be called Laurel Place. The home will support adults living with acquired brain injuries, complex mental health needs, and physical disabilities, providing community care to adults who would otherwise have a pro-longed stay in hospital.

The home will be split into three communities – as small group living provides a more homely, supportive, and responsive care environment – and each of the 32 bedrooms will have its own ensuite wet room. Additionally, the home will feature six apartments, split across the three communities, which are specially designed for adults who are ready to live more independently, while also knowing that specialist healthcare support remains available around the clock.

The home will also have communal dining and living spaces, sensory bathrooms, an activities hub, a large accessible garden, and a dedicated therapy room offering holistic therapeutic care and support led by the in-home Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist.

Laurel Place is set to open in Summer 2024 and will create over 100 new healthcare jobs in the local area, including Health Care Assistants, Registered Nurses, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists. Recruitment is due to start this summer, and candidates can register their interest online at: https://www.exemplarhc.com/care-homes/laurel-place

Steve Rigby, Head of Developments at Exemplar Health Care, said:

“We are delighted to start work on our new specialist care home, Laurel Place, in Bishop Auckland. This development underscores our steadfast commitment to providing exceptional nursing care for adults with complex needs.”

“Laurel Place will not only enhance the lives of our residents but also bring significant benefits to the local community. With the creation of 100 new healthcare jobs, we are proud to contribute to the economic growth and prosperity of the area. This development showcases our dedication to delivering high-quality care while fostering employment opportunities and positively impacting the lives of adults with complex care needs in Bishop Auckland and the surrounding area.”
