Land deal paves way for homes on steelworks site

Bellway has exchanged contracts to buy vacant land on the former Weardale Steelworks site in Wolsingham in the hopes of building 120 homes.

The housebuilder has submitted an application seeking approval for detailed plans to build homes on the site off Durham Road. The development would consist of 108 units for private sale – including two-bedroom bungalows and three-, four- and five-bedroom detached houses – as well as 12 affordable properties.

Outline planning permission for the redevelopment of the former steelworks site was granted by Durham County Council in November 2021. The land was used for steelworks from 1864 and saw continuous operation until its closure in 2008.
