Aura Infection Control is the market leader in the UK and Ireland dental industry supplying the products and guidance needed to keep patients safe including PPE, hand hygiene and surface cleaning products.
Managing Director Laura Edgar has been at the helm for ten years now, overseeing operations from their County Durham headquarters at Business Durham’s Stainton Grove Industrial Estate in Barnard Castle, which has been their home since 2001.
The business was started over 20 years ago by Laura’s parents Jayne, a medical microbiologist, and her father, Richard a salesman, combining their skills to create Aura Infection Control. As the family-run business expanded, they needed more space, that’s when they moved to Stainton Grove Industrial Estate from the West Yorkshire town of Brighouse.
Laura said: “The business had grown at such a rate that it needed somewhere with more office and warehouse space, and the site was perfect.”
Aura Infection Control came to Stainton Grove with one unit on the site employing two members of staff in 2001, fast forward almost 20 years to today where they have over 7000 sq. ft of office and warehouse space employing 14 members of staff.
Since becoming a Business Durham tenant, Aura Infection Control has benefitted from support programmes managed by business support specialists like Digital Drive County Durham, commissioned and managed by Business Durham. They attended a number of workshops to improve their digital communications.
When the COVID-19 hit in 2020 and the UK went into lockdown British dental practices shut down overnight, leaving the business with an enormous amount of surplus stock.
Stock that was in short supply and great demand from front line key workers. This included gowns, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitiser, aprons, and other PPE equipment. The business needed extra space for the additional stock, and Business Durham’s Anne Ellwood, Property Manager for the South was only too happy to help.
Laura said: “As soon as demand soared and we needed extra storage, Anne from Business Durham found a solution by providing an extra warehouse down the road at Stainton Grove Industrial Estate – and that’s typical. Business Durham and Durham County Council are so pro-business and supportive in lots of ways. They communicate clearly, and you feel there is a support structure around you.”
The extra space enabled Laura to adapt her business to supply personal protection equipment to key workers across the County including the region’s police forces, care homes, GP surgeries – and Middlesbrough Football Club – who all benefited from Aura’s tried and tested stock, with not a penny added to the price.
While many companies have jumped on the PPE bandwagon, few understand how it should be best used to keep employees, staff, and customers safe. Employers have a legal obligation to care for their staff. Even a simple box of gloves can pose a risk of cross-contamination, so expert advice from trained staff is as important as the PPE itself.
“I’m extremely proud of the way the team has responded,” says Laura. “At the start of the lockdown, they went home not knowing if they’d be brought back or furloughed. But we had a warehouse full of products, we were in a great position to help, and the staff adapted brilliantly. We hope to remain at Stainton Grove Industrial Estate for many years to come.”
Anne Ellwood, Business Durham Property Manager South said: “Aura Infection Control has been an exemplary tenant for many years. We were only too happy to help when they needed extra space to stock the additional PPE and hygiene products. We are much more than just a landlord, our dedicated and experienced team provide bespoke, impartial support that creates the right environment for sustainable business growth.”
