Find out how we helped Derwentside Business Centre tenants ‘ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services North East’ grow turnover from £0 to £1million in just over three years.
Chris Blewitt started trading as ServiceMaster Clean contract Services Durham & Teesside in March 2018. After 30 years of operational experience running factories and supply chains for major national and international food, drink, and chemical businesses, he felt it was time to do something for himself.
After extensive research, Chris identified several opportunities in the commercial cleaning market and decided to purchase the licence to run a commercial cleaning franchise in Durham & Teesside under the name ServiceMaster Clean.
When looking for business premises Business Durham were on hand to provide cost-effective office space at Derwentside Business Centre in Consett, which has been the perfect place to base the business. Chris expands: ”The staff at the business centre have always been very helpful, provided lots of support, guidance and having a manned reception area is a real plus for a business like mine.”
ServiceMaster Clean Durham & Teesside have grown steadily since their move acquiring a broad range of clients in Durham City, Bishop Auckland, Consett and Middlesbrough increasing in staff numbers to over 100 and turnover from £0 to £1million. However, in April 2020, the first lockdown hit and turnover initially halved, as offices closed and people started to work from home.
Chris added: “When the pandemic hit, we, like many other businesses struggled. Thankfully, the team at Business Durham were on hand to point us in the right direction for funding opportunities to help us navigate the challenging times. The pandemic was quite concerning, but as the months passed our clients started to return and in some cases with increased sanitisation needs.”
The company was growing at such a rate that around Christmas 2020, when the country was recording its highest level of COVID cases, Chris decided the time was right to acquire the Tyneside and Wearside franchise of ServiceMaster Clean, completing the acquisition in February 2021. Chris added: “Bringing two businesses together is hard work but I’m pleased to report we are thriving. We now service over 110 sites with our expanding team of 120 dedicated staff. We have changed our trading name to ‘ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services North East’ to reflect the expansion. We are very close to having on-going contracts worth £1 million. Not bad for a business that started only 3 and a quarter year’s ago.”
Business Durham helped the company with funding support and sourcing a second office.
Centre Manager Julie Crawford added: “At Business Durham we are much more than just a landlord. This has been a very challenging time for small businesses so it’s encouraging to hear of his success. I hope that Service Master Contract Services North East continues to thrive and grow and we at Business Durham look forward to working with and supporting Chris on his journey.”
As restrictions start to ease, now more than ever professional cleaning services are in high demand and ServiceMaster Clean Contract Services North East are looking forward to delivering those services across the region.
