    DBOP: C&A Embroidery & Print

Find out how participating in the DBOP Engineering and Manufacturing support programme helped C&A Embroidery & Print enjoy their most successful year: doubling turnover, moving to larger premises and revolutionising their sales and marketing strategy.

Owner and Director of C&A Embroidery & Print Laura Flood took the reins of her parent’s former equine laundry business in 2014, whilst completing a Business Management Degree at Teesside University where she graduated in 2018.

Since then, Laura has steadily grown the business providing products for well know businesses such as Collin’s Seafood, Cobots Online in addition to sports clubs including Darlington Football Club and Sedgefield Rugby Club to name a few.

Laura heard about the DBOP Engineering and Manufacturing Programme on social media, and with big ambitions to grow the company signed up as one of 18 companies taking part in the 2021 programme managed by Business Durham’s DBOP team and delivered by sales specialists Buzztastic.

The support includes preparing for and exhibiting within the Incubator Zone at The Engineering and Manufacturing Conference (EMCON), the region’s largest of its kind held annually in September at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe.

Companies taking part benefit from one-to-one support, workshops, networking opportunities and a host of other resources to equip businesses with the skills they need to increase sales opportunities when exhibiting at a large event.

Laura explained why the programme was so beneficial for C&A: “There’s a lot more that goes into exhibiting than just turning up on the day.  We started preparing for EMCON months in advance with online workshops providing sales tips and tricks, presentation techniques and research strategies to make sure we got the most out of the day. On the day we secured six new clients with over twenty leads in the pipeline. We’ve never been busier.”

DBOP Business Engagement Officer Lisa Wall added: “The Incubator Zone is designed to be a steppingstone for smaller businesses to not only grow their sales at EMCON but to gain additional skills to develop long lasting sales strategies that can help deliver sustainable growth. It’s fantastic to hear that C&A has gained several new clients directly from EMCON and we look forward to supporting its future growth through ongoing engagement as part of the DBOP programme.”

C&A has enjoyed its busiest year to date, doubling turnover, moving to bigger premises and transforming its sales strategies. Many new clients were businesses it met through taking part in the DBOP Engineering and Manufacturing Programme.

Victoria Fleming, owner of Buzztastic and deliverer of the programme explains why this year’s cohort of businesses were so successful: “It’s really rewarding to see the class of 21 not only smash their sales targets at EMCON but following up those leads, to grow and develop as a business long after EMCON. We already have 8 businesses signed up for this year’s programme and with another 18 in the pipeline 2022 promises to be another fantastic year.”

Programme benefits included gaining new clients, collecting sales leads, strategy development, networking plus profile building activities. The DBOP Incubator Zone first featured at EMCON back in 2018 and has accumulated an impressive catalogue of success stories including companies who have gone to take larger exhibition stands at subsequent events.

Looking to the future C&A is hoping to continue its growth as Laura explains: “The future is exciting; we hope to continue to grow and expand. Our new unit gives us a lot more room so we’re looking to take on more staff to manage the work that’s coming in.  We’re also considering exhibiting within the main EMCON conference this year due to our overwhelming success in 2021.”

Recruitment for the 2022 DBOP Engineering and Manufacturing Programme is now underway. The support is designed to help County Durham businesses overcome barriers to sales and win new contracts within the engineering and manufacturing sector. Entry onto this programme includes exhibition space at EMCON 2022, one of the UK’s biggest engineering and manufacturing shows, membership of the Engineering and Manufacturing Network and advice on how to maximise sales opportunities when exhibiting.
