    Durham Box

Bishop Auckland based corrugated packaging manufacturer Durham Box is undergoing a significant period of growth following the acquisition of additional land near the original site.

The company will eventually occupy a 110,000 sq. ft site and is currently in the process of readying its existing 90,000 sq. ft facility for the expansion and increase in demand it expects to see from the major investment it has committed.

The project has also included the purchase of a new digital printer.

Durham Box approached the County Durham Growth Fund team for support to implement its plans, which involve building the 20,000 sq. ft extension to the existing site and re-designing existing space to have a well-structured production line from goods in, through production to goods out.

The project will lead to the creation of 20 new jobs as the company rolls out its growth plans.

Dan Morris, Director at Durham Box, said: “The acquisition of the land and investment in new machinery has put us in an ideal position to expand our client base and improve efficiency.

“However, to facilitate this increase in volume and to cope with the rise in demand of our products and services, the company needed to re-design the factory layout, and with the support of the County Durham Growth Fund we have been able to do that.”

Durham Box was established in 1989 with the initial focus on supplying low volume packaging to local businesses. Since then, and particularly in recent years, the company has grown significantly and now serves many well-known brands across a range of sectors and has extended its reach to have a national focus.

The County Durham Growth Fund is managed by Business Durham in partnership with UMi and is supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). All successful grant applications are appraised by UNW LLP, an independent firm of Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers.

Sarah Slaven, Interim Managing Director at Business Durham,  said: “It’s fantastic for Durham Box, a manufacturing company with its roots firmly in County Durham, expanding and investing and I am delighted that we have been able to support them in the next phase of their journey.”

Simon Allen, Investment Centre Director at UMi, said: “The County Durham Growth Fund is there to help businesses like Durham Box, that have ambitious plans to grow and require the additional investment to make their plans a reality.”

John Healey, Corporate Finance Partner at UNW LLP, said: “Durham Box is an excellent example of the type of innovative business that the County Durham Growth Fund was set up to support.”
