Strike While the Irons Hot Ltd (DBOP)

A local professional ironing service, Strike While the Irons Hot, has gone from strength to strength over the past nine months taking on three new members of staff and is set for growth within its new premises at Meadowfield Industrial Estate in Durham.

Strike While the Irons Hot enables residents across County Durham, Washington and Sunderland to enjoy their spare time rather than worry about the chore of ironing. The company has a customer base of over 600 clients. It works closely with Business Durham taking advantage of their help and guidance to develop the business.

Phil Mill, Director of Strike While the Irons Hot, said: “It was around six months ago when things really started to pick up. I had aspirations to move into a unit to enable the businesses’ group of self-employed ironers to become full-time employees. With guidance from Business Durham in May of this year, Strike While the Irons Hot moved into its first premises at Meadowfield Industrial Estate.

“Business Durham has helped me with everything from recruitment, via the Advance Durham employment programme, to email marketing through one of their workshops. Since moving into the unit we’ve taken on three new ironers. They’ve been joined by two of our existing self-employed ironers and the team of five based in the unit has the capacity to iron around 250kg per day. I’ve also recruited an administration assistant to help with our bookings and invoicing and hope in the coming months to further expand the team.

“My aim is to expand the business by 50% next year as the new unit offers the business great scope for growth. We already have a strong customer base with our vans collecting ironing from up to 25 customers a night, six nights a week. Going forward I hope to further the business by adding another van to the fleet to enable us to collect from more customers in existing areas and maybe increase our coverage to new areas too.”

Michael Harriott, Business Engagement Officer at Business Durham said: “As part of the Durham Business Opportunities Programme we have been able to help Phil with his ambitious plans for the company.  Strike While the Irons Hot’s move to Meadowfield is part of those plans to take the business to the next level and has already created a number of new jobs. They are a great example of what can be achieved with hard work and dedication. I look forward to supporting Phil in tackling the North East’s un-ironed clothes!”
