One of Raby Castle, Park and Garden’s volunteers has been nominated for this year’s Durham Tourism Superstar award, and the north east destination is encouraging everyone to vote for him.

Jimmy Nicol is an 86-year-old with the passion and energy of a youngster, and whilst he is representing Raby in the awards, he is a strong ambassador for the region as a whole.

Jimmy said: “What a wonderful feeling to have made the shortlist in these awards. My fellow nominees are all exceptional in their field, and it’s a privilege to be nominated alongside them.

“I love the north east and everything the region has to offer. I once sent a County Durham calendar to the Spanish royal family, along with information about the area as a Christmas present. I was both surprised and delighted to receive a Christmas card from them in return. Thank you to everyone who has voted for me so far – it means the world.”

Jimmy joined Raby in 2018 as a volunteer, sharing the castle’s fascinating history and has also been involved with meeting and greeting visitors at several Raby events.

Claire Jones, head of leisure and tourism at Raby Estates said: “Jimmy is a fantastic ambassador for Raby who promotes the castle at every opportunity, and this has led to even more people joining us as volunteers. His passion and energy are commented upon by everyone and whenever we may require some extra help, Jimmy always tries to make himself available – his dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.

“Whilst our volunteers are often praised by our visitors, Jimmy is frequently mentioned by name as his endearing character and passion for Raby shines through. We hope Jimmy knows how grateful we are for his assistance, and we would like to encourage as many people as possible to vote for him in these regional awards – for Jimmy to be crowned as Durham Tourism Superstar would be a wonderful achievement.”

Jimmy often takes new volunteers at Raby Castle, Park and Gardens under his wing, helping to show them the ropes, ensuring they feel comfortable in their role.

Tim Dodgson, public engagement and learning officer at Raby Estates said: “Jimmy loves people and shows such genuine care for everyone. He is a constant here at Raby and he never fails to have a smile on his face.”

The Durham Tourism Superstar accolade will be awarded to an individual who goes above and beyond the call of duty to ensure visitors to Durham have an excellent experience, and recognises the dedication and passion of those working in Durham’s tourism industry.

Voting for the Durham Tourism Superstar is now open and will close on Tuesday 24 June 2025.
