A local independent school in Consett is helping its pupils build for the future, offering brick laying qualifications following a donation of bricks from a regional builder.
Delta Independent School is an alternative provision dedicated to supporting young people who, for one reason or another, have not found success in mainstream education.
Adding to its growing curriculum offer - which includes Hairdressing and Beauty Catering, Health and Social Care, Enterprise, Travel and Tourism, Sport Science, IT and Personal Growth and Wellbeing - the school has been able to enhance its Construction classes after a donation of bricks from Amethyst Homes.
Ryan Curran, Vice Principal at Delta Independent School, said: “Thanks to the donation, a group of our year 10 and 11 pupils (aged 15-16) have been able to practice their brick laying skills. This additional hands-on experience will go a long way in helping them to successfully complete their entry Level and Levels 1 and 2 qualifications in bricklaying, assessed by Pearson Edexcel.
There are 16 students taking part in the brick laying course - including Alfie Woodburn and Logan Smith, both aged 15.
Alfie said: “I am really enjoying the hands-on experience and being able to be outside whilst learning new skills.”
Delta Independent School caters for up to 62 pupils aged between 13-16, providing a nurturing and highly individualised environment where each learner is valued, supported, and challenged to reach their potential. It has recently overhauled its curriculum to move beyond traditional class-based subjects, instead focusing on developing the practical skills and personal growth needed for life beyond school. Its broad and balanced offer includes GCSEs in English, Maths, Biology, and History - accompanied by a range of vocational based studies.
Richard Bass, Managing Director at Amethyst Homes, said: “As a Consett based business, we are committed to supporting local people and organisations. It is widely reported that there is a labour skills shortage in construction. By equipping students with practical knowledge and qualifications, we hope to inspire the next generation of builders and tradespeople. This partnership aligns perfectly with our commitment to community development and education.”
Established in 2013, Amethyst Homes has created over 600 properties in the Northeast. Currently delivering projects in Consett, East Sleekburn (in Southeast Northumberland), Guide Post and Newcastle, Amethyst specialises in a wide range of housing including homes well suited to first time buyers, those looking for a larger, family property, or bungalows for people wanting a more accessible property.
In addition to its home building successes, since the beginning of 2022, Amethyst has trained two apprentices and invested over £3m into local jobs and training opportunities within the supply chain.
The company maintained its 5-star customer satisfaction rating from the Home Builders Federation (awarded in 2024 and 2025) and has been awarded Gold for three consecutive years by independent research company, In-House Research, with over 90% of customers surveyed stating they would recommend Amethyst Homes to friends and family.
