As County Durham continues to grow its reputation as a hub for independent businesses and creative talent, initiatives like Billy No Mates are playing an important role in supporting the region’s freelance economy.

Launched in March 2023 by Sarah from KINSHIP, Billy No Mates started in Bishop Auckland as a simple response to a challenge many remote workers face: isolation. What began as an informal meet-up in a local café has since evolved into a network of regular coworking sessions across the wider North East, including Darlington, Yarm, and beyond.

At its core, Billy No Mates is helping to reduce loneliness and improve wellbeing among freelancers and remote workers—an increasingly important part of the modern workforce. By creating low-pressure environments to work alongside others, the initiative supports productivity and connection without the need for formal office spaces. There’s no pressure to network or even to chat—just a welcoming space where you can work independently, with others around you when you need it.

At the same time, it actively supports local independent venues. By hosting sessions in cafés, creative spaces and community hubs, Billy No Mates brings consistent footfall to small businesses across the region, helping to showcase the strength and diversity of County Durham’s independent scene.

It also reflects a broader shift in how people connect professionally. Moving away from rigid, traditional networking formats, Billy No Mates offers something far more accessible—no suits, no pitches, just genuine, informal connection. This makes it easier for a wide range of professionals to get involved, from those just starting out to more established freelancers.

If you’re looking for a relaxed way to connect with other freelancers locally, you can join an upcoming session in Bishop Auckland at Knead A Slice on 7th May—a great chance to experience the community for yourself.
