Every business has a story about the conversation that changed everything. It might have been a chance introduction, a recommendation over coffee or meeting the right person at exactly the right time.
In a world of video calls, social media and AI-powered tools, those face-to-face conversations remain one of the most powerful drivers of business growth. The best opportunities often begin with a conversation.
That's why Business Durham is launching the North Durham Business Network, a new networking community designed to bring together businesses, entrepreneurs and professionals from across North Durham and the wider County Durham area. Building on the success of the former Drum Business Park Group and Northern Tenants Network, the new network creates a larger, more inclusive community where businesses can connect, collaborate and grow together.
Why networking still matters
Behind every successful business is a strong network of relationships. Whether you're looking for new customers, trusted suppliers, collaborators or simply a fresh perspective, the people you meet can have a lasting impact on your business. While technology has changed the way we communicate, it hasn't replaced the value of genuine, face-to-face connections.
Networking isn't just about exchanging business cards. It's about sharing ideas, learning from others, discovering opportunities and becoming part of a supportive local business community.
A fresh approach to business networking
Let's be honest. Networking doesn't always have the best reputation. It can sometimes feel intimidating, overly formal or focused on selling.
The North Durham Business Network has been created to be different.
It's designed to provide a welcoming environment where meaningful conversations come first. Whether you're running an established business, growing a small company or just starting out, you'll have the opportunity to meet like-minded professionals, exchange experiences and make connections that could benefit your business long after the event has finished.
As a brand new network, everyone starts on equal footing. It's an opportunity to become part of the community from the very beginning, build relationships early and help shape how the network develops in the years ahead.
You'll also hear about the latest support available through Business Durham and gain practical insights that you can take back into your organisation.
Launching with Jeni Smith
To celebrate the launch, we're delighted to welcome networking specialist and speaker Jeni Smith as our guest speaker.
Drawing on more than 20 years' experience, alongside her PhD research at Durham University, Jeni will explore why relationships remain one of the most valuable assets in business and how building meaningful connections can create opportunities for long-term success.
Whether you're a confident networker or someone who usually finds networking a little daunting, you'll leave with practical ideas and a fresh perspective on how to build stronger professional relationships.

The inaugural North Durham Business Network takes place on Thursday 16 July, from 8.30am to 10.30am, at Durham Cricket in Chester-le-Street. Attendance is free, but places must be booked in advance.
