HIYED CIC Brings Inclusive Sensory Calm Space to Summer Sounds Festival

Bishop Auckland-based Hiyed CIC is expanding its mission to create more accessible and inclusive experiences across the region through a new collaboration with Summer Sounds Festival, taking place in Guisborough on 11 and 12 July.

Founded by Tracy Fee, a participant in the 2025 Durham City Incubator programme delivered by Business Durham, Hiyed CIC has grown from its Bishop Auckland base to champion accessibility, inclusion and opportunity across County Durham and the wider North East.

The organisation's mission is to create great opportunities that remove barriers to employment for adults with learning difficulties, mental health difficulties, autism and other health conditions that may impact working life. Through projects that promote accessibility, wellbeing and community participation, Hiyed CIC is helping to create environments where everyone can feel supported and included.

As part of the two-day festival, Hiyed CIC will deliver a dedicated Sensory Calm Space, providing festival-goers of all ages with a safe, welcoming environment designed to support wellbeing and sensory regulation.

Created specifically with neurodivergent individuals in mind, the space will use carefully considered lighting, sound, scent and tactile elements to help reduce sensory overload and promote relaxation. Visitors will be able to step away from the busy festival atmosphere, reset, and return to enjoy the event at their own pace.

The tented calm space will feature noise-cancelling headphones, sensory resources such as fidget toys, stress balls and comfort items, along with bean bags and comfortable seating. Different zones will cater to a range of sensory needs, offering a quiet, cool and supportive environment for anyone who needs time to unwind.

Throughout the festival, Hiyed CIC will also host a programme of activities including non-verbal games, sound baths and voice-led yoga sessions, providing additional opportunities for relaxation, wellbeing and connection.

Sensory bags will be available for those who require them, containing practical resources and activities to support self-regulation, including colouring sheets, breathing techniques and other helpful tools.

Adding to the excitement, the space will also welcome a special pop-up event from Ryan Swain, founder of You, Me & ADHD, offering further insight, support and lived experience for neurodivergent individuals and their families.

The partnership marks an important step in Hiyed CIC's growing work within the events sector. By introducing accessible sensory spaces at festivals and public events, the organisation is helping to create more inclusive environments where neurodivergent individuals can participate comfortably and confidently.

The Summer Sounds Festival collaboration represents the beginning of a wider programme of work aimed at improving accessibility and inclusion across events throughout the region.
