Lanchester Firm Leads International GLP-1 Research Study

Complement Genomics Ltd, based at the Durham Genome Centre in Lanchester, has joined forces with partners in Japan, Portugal and Scotland to launch an innovative new study investigating whether Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation can benefit people using GLP-1 weight management medications.

The collaboration brings together Complement Genomics, Japanese biotechnology company Kaneka, Portuguese nutrition technology specialist Qina, and Contract Research Organisation StudySetGo.

The study will recruit participants currently prescribed a GLP-1 medication and aims to generate valuable real-world evidence on the potential role of CoQ10 in supporting wellbeing during weight loss. Researchers will examine whether CoQ10 may help support energy levels, metabolic health and overall wellbeing in individuals using GLP-1 therapies.

CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound found in every cell of the body and plays a critical role in mitochondrial energy production. As GLP-1 medicines become increasingly popular for weight management and metabolic health, researchers are keen to understand how nutritional interventions may help optimise patient outcomes.

The study will be recruiting 88 GLP-1 users who will have either CoQ10 or placebo and they will be asked to undertake a series of simple tests, such as sit to stand and hand strength, plus biomarker tests, over four separate visits covering 9 months. Subjects will also get free nutrition support and exercise plans, to help them on their weight loss journey.

The study hopes to answer:

1. Can CoQ10 help support energy levels during weight loss?

2. Does supplementation influence general wellbeing?

3. Can CoQ10 play a role in supporting healthy metabolism alongside GLP-1 therapy?

4. How do participants perceive the benefits of combining nutritional supplementation with modern weight-management treatments?

The initiative represents a significant milestone for Complement Genomics and reinforces County Durham's growing reputation as a location for innovative life sciences research and international collaboration.

Dr Neil Sullivan, Owner of Complement Genomics Ltd, said:

"We are delighted to participate in this ground-breaking research. Having the capability to recruit and run entire trials, in our case in the nutraceutical sector, represents a significant step forward for our company."

The study showcases the ability of a County Durham business to lead international projects involving partners from multiple countries while delivering research with potential global impact.

Recruitment is now underway, with organisers hoping to attract participants from across the North East.
