Making Every Contact Count: Free MECC Training Coming to Newton Aycliffe
People across Newton Aycliffe are being encouraged to take part in free Making Every Contact Count (MECC) training this September and October.
Delivered in partnership with Wellbeing for Life, the training is designed to give people the confidence and knowledge to have short, supportive conversations about health and wellbeing and help others access the right support.
MECC is based around three simple steps:
Ask – Start a conversation, listen and understand.
Assist – Help someone connect their health and lifestyle choices with the benefits of making a positive change.
Act – Share useful information or signpost people towards relevant local support.
You don't need to be a health expert to take part. MECC is about having friendly, everyday conversations and helping people feel supported when they are ready to make a change.
Flexible training available
During September and October 2026, free MECC training will be available to people living and working in Newton Aycliffe.
There are a range of options available, including:
Face-to-face sessions in the local area
Online sessions that can be joined from anywhere
Short 20-minute sessions
Core 90-minute sessions
Flexible timings to fit around different commitments
The training can help participants feel more confident talking about health, understand how they can support others in a simple and positive way, and discover more about services and support available within the local community.

The focus on Newton Aycliffe recognises that some people experience greater health challenges than others. By encouraging more people to have supportive conversations and connect others with help at an earlier stage, MECC can play a role in improving wellbeing and helping to reduce health inequalities across the community.
