New College Durham (NCD) is celebrating the recognition of its Principal and Chief Executive, Andy Broadbent, following his success at the North East Chamber of Commerce Chamber Business Awards 2026, where he was named Business Leader of the Year.
The award, introduced for the first time in 2026 and sponsored by Big Purple Group, recognises exceptional leadership across the North East and celebrates individuals whose vision, values and commitment have made a lasting impact on their organisations, communities and the regional economy. Andy was shortlisted alongside outstanding regional business leaders Helen Cowie of Eldon Square and Sarah House of OCDC Cleaners Ltd.
The accolade reflects Andy's staunch belief that education is one of the most powerful drivers of social mobility, economic prosperity and regional transformation. Throughout his leadership he has championed skills development, employability and lifelong learning, ensuring that the college continues to respond to the evolving needs of employers while creating opportunities for people of all ages to fulfil their potential.
Under Andy's leadership, NCD has strengthened its role as one of the North East's leading further and higher education institutions and became one of only four Advanced Manufacturing Technical Excellence Colleges in the country. The college also continues to build strong partnerships with employers, schools, universities and regional stakeholders to help address skills shortages and support economic growth across County Durham and the wider region.
Recognising that the success of both students and staff depends upon an inclusive, supportive and compassionate learning environment, Andy’s leadership has also reinforced the college's commitment to civic responsibility, with extensive community engagement, charitable initiatives and partnership working reflecting the important role educational institutions play as anchor organisations within their communities.
Speaking after receiving the award, Andy said:
"I am incredibly honoured to receive this recognition from the North East Chamber of Commerce. While my name is on the award, it is very much a reflection of the dedication, professionalism and passion of my colleagues across New College Durham. Every day they make a difference to the lives of our students and to the communities we serve. Together we share a belief that education has the power to transform lives, strengthen businesses and create a more prosperous future for our region."
The North East Chamber Business Awards celebrate organisations and individuals that are shaping the future of the regional economy through leadership, innovation and excellence. The introduction of the Business Leader of the Year category reflects the Chamber's commitment to recognising inspirational leaders who demonstrate vision, integrity and lasting impact across the North East business community.
Congratulating Andy on his achievement, Deputy Principal of New College Durham, Alison Maynard said:
"This award is richly deserved and reflects Andy's exceptional leadership, his commitment to students and staff and his passion for ensuring education remains at the heart of economic and social progress.
