New Durham Student Accommodation Development Reaches Highest Point

Caddick Construction has marked a major milestone in the build programme at Whitesmocks Limited’s Melbury Court scheme with a topping out ceremony as the 232-bed purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) project reaches its highest point.
Work on Melbury Court, which is progressing at pace, is due to complete in summer 2027 and will see Durham-based Caddick Construction deliver modern, purpose-built living spaces alongside new landscaping to the surrounding area.
Representatives from Caddick, Whitesmocks and its supply chain came together to mark the occasion and see the progress being made on the £25m development, which will welcome students for the 2027/28 academic year.
Caddick was appointed to the design and build contract at the start of this year, with the scheme designed to support the growing demand for student accommodation in the city.
Caddick has also shown its support for the local community through its work on the development off Old Dryburn Way by engaging students from Durham New College on an art project for the site.
Steve Ford, Regional Managing Director at Caddick Construction North East & Yorkshire, commented: “We’re proud to have achieved the first major milestone on Melbury Court. It is fantastic to see the building take shape and to celebrate this occasion with our partners and wider team, all of whom are playing a key role in the delivery of this project. Reaching the highest point of this scheme represents significant progress for the city’s purpose-built student accommodation offering and our site team is working closely with our supply chain to ensure the development is built to the highest quality, in order to provide excellent accommodation for students in Durham.”
