The announcement of this year’s Earthshot Prize winners at COP30 has once again highlighted the importance of innovative, impactful solutions to global environmental challenges.
As momentum builds for the next award cycle, Business Durham would like to encourage organisations across County Durham and the wider North East to consider applying for the 2026 Earthshot Prize.
The 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub at the Port of Tyne, acting as an appointed nominator, is keen to identify and support businesses, organisations and individuals from our region who are delivering strong sustainability projects or pioneering low-carbon innovation. Being nominated provides a significant opportunity to gain international visibility and connect with global partners committed to environmental progress.
Our region has already demonstrated its capability at this level. Durham-based Low Carbon Materials was selected as a finalist in 2022, showcasing the strength of innovation that exists within County Durham. We are confident that many more organisations across the region have the potential to follow in their footsteps.
Who Should Consider Applying?
Businesses, innovators and project teams working on solutions that contribute to:
environmental sustainability
carbon reduction
nature protection or restoration
circular economy approaches
clean technology or climate resilience
are strongly encouraged to submit an expression of interest.
Application Process
The initial enquiry form is concise and is estimated to take 20–30 minutes to complete. If the Port of Tyne nominates a project, the organisation will be able to publicly communicate its status as an official Earthshot Prize nominee — a valuable credential for raising profile and building credibility.
Deadline for submission: Monday 24th November

A Call to the Region
County Durham and the North East are home to exceptional innovators and forward-thinking organisations. We encourage all businesses and partners within our network to consider whether they — or someone they know — could be a strong candidate for next year’s Earthshot Prize.
This is a valuable opportunity to showcase the talent, ambition and environmental leadership that define our region.
