A Durham based design studio is expanding its creative output with the launch of a new digital interiors magazine.
SPELK Studio has introduced SPELK Stuff, an online publication created by Kelly and Graeme Smith to explore the character, craft and culture influencing contemporary Northern interiors.
The magazine brings the studio’s design expertise together, offering photography, practical tips and insights shaped by the wider creative community SPELK collaborates with.
Kelly has also received help through the Durham City Incubator (DCI) as she works on transitioning her designs into off-the-shelf production.
In 2024, she joined the DCI Business Incubation Programme for support with this shift.
“When I joined DCI, I already had the designs for the off-the-shelf furniture in place,” Kelly explained. “But I needed help with moving it into production, navigating how to partner with a manufacturer, tackling legal issues like trademarks, non-disclosure agreements, and copyright for my designs.”
It was about moving from being a small design business that creates one-offs to becoming a fully fledged creative studio with the ability to manufacture in batches.
