Two well-established northeast firms have joined forces to deliver a fast-track refurbishment project at Northumbria University, which formed part of the institution’s ambitious summer works programme.
The project, led by the construction division of Meldrum Group, saw the transformation of two former art studios into modern lecture theatres within the Squires Annexe. Meldrum appointed the Durham based architectural practice, Howarth Litchfield, to provide architectural, interior design and principal designer services.
With a proven track record of delivering higher education projects to tight deadlines, Howarth Litchfield was a natural choice, according to Kevin Turnbull, Head of Design at Meldrum. He said: “This is our first project for Northumbria University and we were determined to assemble a team we could trust to deliver on time, on budget and to a high standard."
“Having worked with Howarth Litchfield on several successful projects, we knew they would hit the ground running and collaborate seamlessly with us. We’re proud of what’s been achieved and hope this marks the beginning of a long-term relationship with the university.”
Dave Pickersgill, Director at Howarth Litchfield, added: “Time was the biggest challenge. Once Meldrum completed the strip-out, we worked closely with their team and the university to develop and get sign off on the design quickly. We’re delighted to have been appointed and hope the end result meets the university’s expectations.”
To create two new lecture theatres the existing mezzanine floor was removed and the space reconfigured to include new WC facilities.
Northumbria University’s Building Surveyor, Tom Moffitt, praised the collaboration between the supply chain partners to get the project over the line. He said: “It’s been full steam ahead on our City Campus over the last few months. Meldrum moved swiftly with the strip-out and reconfiguration to deliver two much-needed lecture theatres, seating 285 and 140 students respectively."
“This has been a true team effort between university colleagues and our contractor and consultant partners. From identifying the space to completing the refurbishment, the turnaround has been exceptional and the quality of work is outstanding.”
Other key contributors to the project included Adelphi Consulting Engineers (structural), JHP Engineers (mechanical and electrical), and Apex Acoustics.
