Northumbrian Water says it is investing £26.9 million in three of its County Durham sites to protect the River Wear, with more than £40m of work to follow nearby.

The water company has announced the money will go towards upgrading its sites in Willington, Low Wadsworth, and Bishop Auckland—as part of a wider £1.7 billion programme planned for 2025 to 2030.

Dean Thompson, project manager at Northumbrian Water, said: "Over the next five years, we are investing more than ever before to ensure that our sites, networks and services continue to deliver the best for our customers, and protect the environment.
