Local housebuilder, Barratt and David Wilson Homes North East, is helping five young people kickstart their careers in the housebuilding industry through its apprenticeship scheme.

Following the new Government’s pledge to build 1.5million new homes within the next five years, there is an even bigger need for apprentices in the housebuilding sector.1 Barratt and David Wilson Homes is supporting this route to success through both its Trade and Degree Apprenticeship Programmes. Trade Programmes include careers as a Bricklayer or Joiner, whilst Degree Programmes cover construction, quantity surveying, technical and real estate.

Joining the local housebuilder, five apprentices will be making their mark at Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ North East division. This includes two Degree Apprentices who will be specialising in Technical and Quantity Surveying departments, whilst in Trade, two will specialise in Joinery and one in Bricklaying.

Joining the housebuilder’s Degree Apprenticeship Programme is 18-year-old Luke Doward, who began his BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice in Technical Design and Management in January. As part of his apprenticeship, Luke will be working closely with internal designers and engineers, urban designers and planners. This will include selecting materials and house types for schemes, reviewing floorplans and layouts, and adopting modern methods of construction in his designs.

Also benefiting from Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ apprenticeship scheme is 19-year-old Grace Snowdon. Grace began her BSc (Hons) in Professional Practice in Residential Development and Quantity Surveying in January. As part of the Quantity Surveying Degree Programme, Grace will be overseeing the commercial side of housebuilding, which involves analysing, preparing and managing costs, from initial build assessments through to site completion.

18-year-old Thomas Pringle, 17-year-old Samuel Reid, and 19-year-old Kay Watts recently began their Trade apprenticeships with the local housebuilder. Both Thomas and Samuel will be specialising in Joinery apprenticeships, whilst Kay is pursuing Bricklaying, making her the first female bricklaying apprentice to join the division. Trade apprenticeships are 18-month courses leading to a Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship qualification, where their time will be split between on-site work and college whilst training to become a fully qualified Tradesperson.

For those who may be looking to follow in these apprentices’ footsteps and kickstart their career in the next generation of housebuilding, applications for Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ Trade Apprenticeship and Degree Apprenticeship Programmes are open. Carl Sobolewski, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North East, commented: “We’re so pleased to be welcoming five very deserving apprentices to the North East division. As someone who joined Barratt via a similar scheme myself, I have experienced first-hand the career opportunities and benefits that it can offer. I’m looking forward to supporting our apprentices’ first steps into what we anticipate will be a successful career within the construction industry.”
