Residents living and working in a County Durham town are being asked for their views on a new redevelopment plan.

Durham County Council has launched a consultation to develop a Strategic Place Plan (SPP) for Stanley.

The council is in the process of developing SPPs for all the county’s towns which will set out a positive vision for each place, underpinned by its Economic Strategy.

For the SPPs, the council is working with residents and businesses to help shape the future of their own area, making each vision unique to the town and its needs.

Cllr Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, said: “We want to hear from the people who live and work in Stanley to help us shape the future of the town. We want to understand residents’ and businesses’ thoughts on Stanley, including what can be improved and what they would like to see in the future. There are no existing ideas in mind - this vision will be directly shaped by the people of Stanley from the beginning.

“Over the next few weeks, we will be talking to people in the streets, organising drop-in sessions, speaking to children and young people in schools, and visiting community groups and local organisations. We will be looking to gather thoughts on the town's strengths, opportunities and challenges, as well as hopes for its future.”

The council will be holding street engagement sessions to gather views from the public. The sessions will take place on:

  • Thursday 2 October - Asda, Stanley Front Street - 11am to 4pm

  • Friday 10 October - Stanley Front Street - 2pm to 6pm

  • Monday 27 October - Louisa Centre foyer -11am to 4pm

  • Wednesday 29 October - Stanley Bus Station - 11am to 4pm

  • Monday 3 November - Mary Street, outside Stanley Bus Station - 11am to 3pm

While consulting on the SPP, the council will also be asking for views on proposed designs for the refurbishment of Stanley Bus Station.

The council has submitted a bid for funding from the North East Combined Authority which, if successful, would allow the station to be refurbished.

Residents can take part in the SPP consultation until 5pm on 14 November. More information on how to get involved can be found at www.letstalkcountydurham.co.uk
