A pioneering material developed in County Durham is helping to decarbonise the UK’s road network, following the successful completion of a major resurfacing project in Surrey.
Low Carbon Materials (LCM), a climate-tech company based at Jade Business Park, has announced the first successful use of its carbon-negative aggregate, ACLA®, in a live highways project. The material was incorporated into the binder course of the asphalt during resurfacing works on Worplesdon Road, Guildford.
Delivered by Eurovia Surfacing in partnership with Ringway and Tarmac on behalf of Surrey Highways and Surrey County Council, the project locked away an impressive 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide—a significant step forward in sustainable infrastructure.
What makes this achievement even more notable is that no changes were needed to standard laying processes, demonstrating ACLA®’s compatibility with existing construction methods and its potential for widespread adoption.
This milestone underscores the growing impact of County Durham’s green innovation sector. As a Business Durham-supported company, LCM continues to lead the way in climate-positive technologies, offering scalable solutions to some of the UK’s most pressing environmental challenges.
