Detective duo launch innovative forensic experience in Durham

A new entertainment venture in Durham is looking to crack the case on a fresh form of immersive leisure experience rooted in forensic investigation and problem-solving.

Detective Rooms Durham has been founded by award-winning private investigator Jen Jarvie and former forensic photographer and expert witness Howard Little. Together, they have combined decades of investigative expertise to create a unique attraction where visitors examine evidence, assess information and solve realistic cases using methods inspired by genuine investigative work.

Designed to stand apart from traditional escape rooms, Detective Rooms Durham focuses on analytical thinking, teamwork and real-world problem-solving rather than puzzles and time-based challenges. The founders believe the concept will appeal to a wide range of customers, including tourists, corporate teams, networking groups and private event organisers seeking a more authentic and engaging experience.

As they prepared to launch the business, Jen accessed support through Business Durham's Durham Startups programme. She worked closely with High Growth Solutions Advisor Mark Johnston, who acted as her dedicated business advisor throughout the start-up journey. Mark provided ongoing one-to-one guidance while connecting Jen with specialist legal and accounting advisers through the Durham Intermediaries network, ensuring she had access to tailored expertise as the business developed.

The support also helped Jen successfully secure £25,000 in start-up finance through the BE Fund, providing the investment needed to bring Detective Rooms Durham to life. The funding enabled the founders to develop their immersive experiences, equip the venue and transform their vision into a distinctive visitor attraction for County Durham.

The combination of expert business advice, access to specialist professional services and start-up funding gave the founders the foundations needed to move the business from concept to launch. By providing tailored one-to-one guidance alongside access to specialist expertise and finance, the Durham Startups programme helped turn an innovative idea into a distinctive new visitor attraction for County Durham.

With its blend of real investigative techniques, immersive storytelling and interactive problem-solving, Detective Rooms Durham offers a unique visitor experience that showcases how innovation, entrepreneurial ambition and the right business support can help bring new ideas to market.

If you are considering starting a business in County Durham, Durham Startups provides a range of tailored support, including specialist advice, mentoring and access to finance. To find out more about the support available, visit www.durhamstartups.co.uk.
