A Durham fishmonger said it “feels surreal” to celebrate 40 years trading in the city’s historic Market Hall after starting out aged just 21.

Ian Kennedy has run IK Fish at Durham Market Hall since 1986, after first helping a friend in the trade.

He said: “I was 21 years of age, and it was 1986. I’d helped a friend with his business for a couple of months, just to learn the trade a little bit, and then the business was sold to me out of goodwill, because there were no bricks and mortar.

“That was the beginning.”
