Views sought on future of Shildon and Newton Aycliffe

People are being invited to have their say on the future of two towns in County Durham.

Durham County Council is developing new Strategic Place Plans (SPP) for Shildon and Newton Aycliffe.

Already adopted for Spennymoor and Durham City, SPPs aim to create a vision for each town by identifying key plans and objectives individual to the area.

Developed in line with the council’s Inclusive Economic Strategy, the SPPs will give residents and businesses the opportunity to help shape the future of their towns by creating an agreed local vision.

Now focusing now on Shildon and Newton Aycliffe, the council is working collaboratively with residents to gain their views on the strengths, opportunities and challenges in the two towns, as well as hopes for the future.

Cllr Lyndsey Fox, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for economy and partnerships, said: “Our town centres have changed and we are looking at how they can deliver a 21st century offer. The aim of the SPPs is to help create safer, friendly town centre environments with an increased focus around experiences, community and convenience.

“We need the public’s help to create new visions for Shildon and Newton Aycliffe. We would encourage all residents, businesses and partners in these areas to take this opportunity to have their say on their town’s futures.”

Residents and businesses can have their say by completing a survey online before 5pm on Friday 1 August.

A full series of engagement events will also be carried out, as well as an outreach programme to schools, businesses and other organisations.
