Celebrating Apprenticeship Week: My Journey so far at Business Durham
Grace Bell, Assistant Marketing Apprentice for Business Durham

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, I’ve been reflecting on my journey so far as the Marketing Apprentice at Business Durham, the business support service for Durham County Council.

My name is Grace Bell, and I joined the organisation in September 2025 as part of the wider Durham County Council apprenticeship programme cohort. In just a few months, I’ve already gained valuable experience and developed skills that are helping me build a strong foundation for a career in marketing.

I am currently completing a Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketing Apprenticeship with Ginger Nut Training. This allows me to combine practical, hands-on workplace experience with structured learning, helping me apply new knowledge directly to my role.

A day in the life of a marketing apprentice

One of the things I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is the variety in my day-to-day work. I support the marketing team by collating daily news and gathering content for blogs that highlight the successes of businesses across County Durham. I also assist with promoting events, attending networking sessions and engaging with local businesses to help share their stories.

Through these responsibilities, I am developing key marketing skills including content creation, digital communication and audience engagement. Working on real projects has helped me understand how marketing strategies are applied in practice and how effective communication can support business growth.

What I’ve learned so far

Although I have only been in my role for a few months, I have already noticed a big increase in my confidence and professional skills. I’ve learned how to communicate more effectively, manage my time and collaborate with colleagues and external partners.

My apprenticeship has also given me a greater understanding of how marketing supports wider business objectives. From promoting positive news stories to supporting business events, I’ve seen first-hand how marketing can strengthen relationships and raise awareness of the support available to local companies.

Support from Business Durham

Business Durham has provided a supportive and welcoming environment in which to begin my career. I have been given opportunities to take on responsibility, attend events and represent the organisation when working with businesses. The guidance and encouragement from my colleagues have been invaluable in helping me develop my skills.

This supportive culture has allowed me to grow in confidence and continuously learn from experienced professionals. It’s clear that Business Durham values apprentices and invests in their development, making it a great place to start a career.

Advice for future apprentices

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would strongly recommend it. An apprenticeship offers the opportunity to gain real-world experience, develop practical skills and build confidence while working towards a recognised qualification.

My advice would be to get involved as much as possible, ask questions and take advantage of every learning opportunity. The more you engage with your role, the more rewarding the experience will be.

Looking ahead

I’m excited to continue developing my skills and contributing to the work of Business Durham. My apprenticeship is helping me build a solid foundation for my future career in marketing, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow within such a supportive organisation.

National Apprenticeship Week highlights the importance of apprenticeships in developing talent and creating career opportunities. I’m proud to be part of that journey at Business Durham.
