Inotec Solutions – Building Resilient Communications for a Connected Future

The support made a huge difference. It gave us direction and helped us understand where we should be focusing our efforts.

Simon Land

Director

When Inotec Solutions Ltd launched in September 2023, it did so with a clear mission: to ensure critical communications remain operational when they are needed most.

Specialising in resilient communications, the County Durham-based business designs and deploys systems that combine satellite and terrestrial technologies to deliver reliable connectivity in even the most challenging environments, from rural locations to emergency response scenarios.

From Industry Experience to New Beginnings

The business was formed following the closure of a previous company, giving founder Simon Land and his colleague the opportunity to build on decades of experience in satellite communications and network engineering.

Drawing on backgrounds in telecommunications, defence, and policing, the team brought with them a deep understanding of how vital communications infrastructure underpins public safety, security, and operational effectiveness.

However, the early days were far from straightforward.

“We had to reinvent ourselves,” explains Simon. “The market had changed, and we needed to find where our expertise could deliver the most value.”

That process led Inotec to focus on resilient communications, systems designed to remain operational during outages, cyber incidents, or infrastructure failures.

Turning Challenge into Opportunity

Early work supporting rural connectivity highlighted both the demand for reliable communications and the pace of change in the sector. As fibre infrastructure expanded into previously underserved areas, Inotec again adapted, pivoting towards specialist applications where resilience, rather than speed alone, is critical.

This shift proved pivotal

The company began developing rapidly deployable communication systems, including mobile communications hubs capable of restoring connectivity during emergencies, major events, or infrastructure failures. These systems are already being used in real-world environments, such as providing connectivity at large-scale events where networks become overloaded.

The Power of Collaboration

A key turning point came through engagement with Business Durham and the Durham Business Growth programme.

Through tailored advice, introductions and ongoing support, Inotec was able to refine its strategy, access new networks, and build confidence in its offering.

“The support made a huge difference,” says Simon. “It gave us direction and helped us understand where we should be focusing our efforts.”

Crucially, this support also connected the business into the region’s growing innovation ecosystem, including Space North East England.

By engaging with the cluster, Inotec became part of a collaborative network of companies working across satellite communications, data and advanced technologies, opening the door to new opportunities.

A Strategic Partnership with AmbaSat

Through these connections, Inotec began working with AmbaSat, a collaboration that would prove instrumental in the company’s next phase of growth.

The partnership combines Inotec’s expertise in network integration with AmbaSat’s capabilities in satellite-based sensing and intelligent system management. Together, the two companies are developing solutions that not only provide connectivity, but actively assess and respond to changing conditions, selecting the most effective communication pathways in real time.

Securing International Funding for Next-Generation Communications

A major milestone in Inotec’s journey came through its collaboration with AmbaSat, resulting in the successful award of €558,000 in funding to develop a pioneering communications solution.

The funding, secured through the European Space Agency’s ARTES 4.0 programme with support from the UK Space Agency, is enabling the development of the Nomadic Multi-Orbit Demonstrator- a rapidly deployable communications system designed for use in complex, remote and disrupted environments.

Rather than being a purely theoretical project, the demonstrator is focused on delivering a practical, field-ready solution. It brings together Inotec’s expertise in rugged, deployable communications infrastructure with AmbaSat’s intelligent gateway technology, which is capable of monitoring network conditions and dynamically managing connectivity.

The system is being designed to integrate multiple communication pathways, including satellite networks across different orbits alongside terrestrial connectivity. By continuously assessing availability, performance and environmental conditions, it can automatically select and switch between networks to maintain reliable service. This approach enables resilient, uninterrupted communications even where traditional infrastructure is unavailable, damaged or under pressure.

As a result, the solution has significant potential across a range of applications, from emergency response and disaster recovery to defence operations and critical infrastructure resilience.

For a young company, securing backing through ESA and the UK Space Agency represents a major endorsement of both the technology and the team behind it. It also demonstrates the strength of collaboration within the North East’s space and innovation ecosystem, where complementary expertise can be brought together to deliver complex, high-value projects.

Strengthening Capability Through Innovation Support

Further support has come through collaboration with regional universities, including work with Durham University to validate the commercial potential of Inotec’s technology.

This independent assessment confirmed that the company’s solution has strong market potential and identified future applications, providing additional credibility as the business looks to scale.

Alongside this, Business Durham support has helped the company strengthen its digital presence and access specialist expertise, ensuring it can effectively communicate its offer to new markets.

Looking Ahead

With a growing pipeline of opportunities, Inotec is now focused on bringing its technology to market and expanding its reach across sectors where resilient communications are critical.

Future plans include scaling production of its deployable communication systems and targeting applications in emergency response, defence, and infrastructure resilience.

Simon’s long-term vision is clear:

“To have systems ready to deploy wherever they’re needed, whether that’s after a storm, during an emergency, or supporting critical operations. Ultimately, it’s about keeping people connected and safe.”

A North East Success Story

Inotec’s journey highlights the strength of County Durham’s innovation ecosystem, where targeted support, collaborative networks, and technical expertise come together to accelerate business growth.

From a standing start to securing international funding and developing cutting-edge communications technology, the company’s progress demonstrates what can be achieved when ambition is matched with the right support and environment.
